Getting Real at the Whole Foods Wine Tasting Bar

The last time I made this stop on Trancas in Napa, something said that it needed closer, more intimate examination. Sitting there in one corner of the wine department, a pair of 8-port Cruvinets took care of their patients:

with enough time between appointments, I found myself more than sufficiently attracted to a blend by Ridge, Geyserville.

It was a 2008, 72% Zinfandel, 20% Carignane, 6% Petite Syrah, and 2% Mourvedre (Mataro), all from Sonoma County. The words of Steve Hall, principal winemaker at Biale, rang in my recollection: "Zinfandel likes company ... in the field, the barrel, the bottle, the aficionado". This wine was reaching it's peak, and is easily found. Cheers.
